August
Hi, I'm back.
I think that Augus is my least favorite month. It's hot and sticky and everyone goes away. This August is OK, it was in the 60s yesterday, but I can't shake the feeling that we're going to pay for not burning to death in August. Maybe it will be awful in September.
When I was little I used to go to summer camp: art camp, nature camp, horrible girl scout camp, soccer camp, sleep away camp, and, once when my parents were really desperate for childcare: methodist bible camp. (We are UU in normal life, though my dad's family are mostly lapsed catholics and my mom was born jewish and later turned buddhist and jain).
Nowadays I work at nature camp. I'm a CIT. I take little kids to ponds to find backswimmers and waterstriders and I show them pinecones that squirrels have eaten and play predator-prey and flashflood with them. Last Friday The councellor and I took the kids to an organic garden and I had them make personal pizzas. The picked broccoli and tomatoes and peas from the garden, then we went back to the kitchen and made pizza dough and tomato sauce.
I'm not scared of the little kids. I'm not one of those people who LOVES ALL BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN, I think that attitude is patronizing. I like my campers because they make me laugh and I don't freeze up with shyness around them. I'm not shy around the councellors, either. The one I work with is named Sallie. She graduated from Prescott College 2 years ago. Now she works at nature camp in the summer and during the rest of the year she works on trail crews and takes juvenile delinquents out into the desert in New Mexico and sometimes drives resupply vans for Outward Bound.
I don't really talk to the other CITs. Some of them go to my school, and I like them, and some I had never met before the summer. I like them, too. In june, they tried to include me, but now they mostly ignore me, because I'm so quiet and scared around them. it's a kind sort of ignoring. I sit with them and they move over to make a space for me.
tahat's all
